About Ernie Hawks

Ernie at wokErnie Hawks, not Michal Hawks, not Ernie Michal Hawks, just Ernie Hawks. Seen here, Ernie is in his favorite room of his North Idaho home... the front porch.

In the late 60’s and early 70’s Ernie acted on many, if not most, of the stages in the North West. After living from day to day from Portland to Pendleton to Seattle to Walla Walla he decided acting was neither easy nor glamorous.

Since moving to North Idaho in the early 70’s, his careers include carpentry, custodian and grounds keeper, stage actor, theater director, work in advertising and public relations as well as a substitute teacher.

A passion for the outdoors has led to extensive activities in outdoor photography, bicycling, hiking and studying the Spirit of Nature. Activities that have consumed hundreds of roles of film, thousands of miles on the bike, several pairs of hiking boots and many, many hours with the Spirit. A few years of living on a boat in Bayview, Idaho only stimulated his desire for the out-of-doors.

Ernie has been exposing film since his high school days, oh so many years ago. It was a way to go hunting without the inconveniences of game laws. With the camera he shoots babies in the spring, doesn’t worry about limits or seasons, shoots from his car and across roads. In fact he gave up hunting with anything but the camera while still a teen. The real truth is he wanted the trophy without the kill.Nikki, Director of Security

Now, Ernie lives in the woods, in the home behind the porch, with his wife Linda Michal-Hawks, the source of the confusion about his name, as well as with their dog Nikki, known as "The Director of Security. From here, The Hawks Nest, a regular column in The River Journal, is created. Ernie also writes about his Spiritual connection through nature, humor and travel. Linda and Ernie maintain a travel blog, www.travellindaernie.blogspot.com. Ernie is also available as a Spiritual/Humorous speaker.

His favorite room, the porch, also offers him a vantage point to view the big game and small animals of the forest, to observe the birds of the woods and to watch the trees grow.
